It’s not easy! You want something memorable and fun but also has a professional edge to it. In this blog post, we’ll walk through how to create an awesome name for your company.
To create a good name for your company, one of the first things you should do is brainstorm. This will involve coming up with as many different words as you can think of that fit the criteria. The perfect name is memorable and also says something about your company. It can be serious, fun, or both! You don’t want to spend too much time on it because you’ll get frustrated and give up; in fact, this may make the task even more difficult for you. So here are a few things to keep in mind as you’re brainstorming for a name.
What is your company all about?
Think about what industry you are in, how you can be different but at the same time, give clues of what you are really about.
If you’re in the software industry, you may want to have the Software word in your name. In the same context, think about what is special about your offering; if you have a product, what are some words that would typically describe it? For example, if you had an event planning company and one of your services was to create the perfect wedding day for couples who want their special day to be tailored specifically to them, then “perfect” is something you might want to play with it in your name.
What the future looks like?
Another question is about how you define your growth opportunity; if you are focusing just on a product, an overt, very explicit name could be the solution; in this case, you could use something like “The Software Company” or “Software World.” Overt names are easy to understand, we all know what American Airlines is about, and nobody thinks about Bank of America as a restaurant or something different than a bank; however, they are difficult to differentiate from the competition unless you are truly in a new niche, even most important the problem with overt names is that they limit the growth, can you imaging Amazon be named E-Library instead of Amazon?
On the other hand, more abstracts names can help position yourself; however, the effort to do it requires more investment, and you can end up with a great name, and not many people will know what it is about, for example, if you found a great name for your company. Still, nobody knows what it is about or is not sure how to spell the word?
The best solution would be to create an overt and abstract name at the same time. For example: “Tailored Events.” In this case, we have two words that are easy to understand (tailored and events) while also having a more abstract name that is about customization.
